Olé: A Spanish Extravaganza Wine Class

Wednesday, February 18th was an evening of abundant wine, education, and conversation as wine aficionados and novices alike gathered for Olé, our Spanish wine class moderated by Columbia Wine Co. manager and CEO of Wine for the 99, Christian Galliani. For three hours, Christian led attendees on a journey that delved into rich and distinct selections from diverse wine regions in Spain.

More than just Temparanillo, Spain is home to some of the most undervalued wines in the world with more vineyards planted to land than any country in the world. Spain places third in terms of volume of wine produced, behind France and Italy. The country has an abundance of native grape varieties with over 400 varieties planted throughout Spain though 80% of the country’s wine production is found from only 20 grapes.

Traditionally, the wines of Spain were best known within its own borders. However, over the past few decades, the nation has steadily improved the way in which wine is produced and the production of higher quality wine has become the focus, resulting in worldwide appeal.

At Olé, attendees enjoyed six selections paired with family-style tapas. Below are the wines represented with brief tasting notes:

Sonim Cava – A dry and crisp blend of Macabeo, Xarel-lo and Perellada with hints of yeast on the finish.

Caramimbre Verdejo, Rioja – Often blended with Viura in Rueda, it has citrus elements covering notes of melon, apple, and stone fruits.

Elegido Rosado de Tempranilla, La Mancha – Heavier than a French Rosé, this wine boasts red cherry fruits and a flinty mint palate with a crisp finish.

Gorgorito Joven Tinto de Toro –  Bright red fruits, balanced acidity and a quick finish.

Valnogal Ribera Del Duero – Darker fruits, balanced acidity and quick finish.

Conde De Jauregui Rioja Reserva – Composed of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha, 10% Mazuelo with an intense and complex aroma of hints of spice, ripe fruit, wood, tobacco, and licorice.

Gran Vinaio Red Grenache, Montsant -Prominent red fruits and minerals, with a slight chalkiness that leads to a dry, long finish.
