The Significance of Champagne for New Year’s Eve

As Wikipedia defines the sparkling drink that is well known for the majority of celebrations around the world: Champagne is a type of sparkling wine and type of an alcoholic drink produced from grapes grown in the champagne region of France following rules that demand, among other things, secondary fermentation of the wine in the bottle to create carbonation, specific vineyard practices, sourcing of grapes exclusively from specific parcels in the champagne appellation and specific pressing regimes unique to the region.

Some use the term champagne as a generic term for sparkling wine, but in many countries, it is illegal to label any product champagne unless it both comes from the Champagne region and is produced under the rules of the appellation.

Did you know that back in the day, champagne was only for the royalty? It’s true. Believe it or not, it was only an exclusive because making champagne was really expensive back in the 16th Century. Aristocrats enjoy champagne in during important events like royal parties and gatherings. Louis XIV of France started loving it when he first tasted it during his teenage years.

Champagne had continued to be the choice for the noble and royalty from the 17th until the 19th centuries. It was also associated with good luck when it was a prime factor of ceremonial ship launches as a naval tradition through breaking a sacrificial bottle of champagne over the ship’s bow as the ship is name aloud and launched into the seas.

Not to mention, champagne was also a tradition not only on the seas but on the racetracks where race car drivers spray up a bottle of champagne while on the winner’s podiums during the 1960s.

Celebration of New Year was not as free as it was a long time ago due to it’s religious significance where you can’t just drink your champagne and celebrate a brand-new year. As years go by, champagne gets more accessible to various people, not only the wealthiest since price goes down and wine-making technologies improve the production of champagne. This is where popping a champagne bottle started which was perfect for New Year’s Eve.

Today, champagne has been a mark of celebrating New Year’s Eve since it signifies not only luck but also the joys and a fresh start into an entire year of life. Happy New Year!
